Ever wondered where the hippie culture started? Well, in the 1960s groups of spiritual freethinkers would gather around Haight-Ashbury, making San Fran the home of the movement. It’s a little more upmarket these days but you can still find shops selling counterculture clothing, mystical keepsakes and even see the occasional original hippie passing by. How’s that for a historic San Francisco attraction?
One of the most culturally significant places in the city is not a museum or gallery, but a street corner. In the 1960s, thanks largely to a single photo of the Grateful Dead, a whole counterculture movement gravitated to this once neighborhood. The Hippie Dream called this neighborhood home and grew into a global phenomenon. Huge festivals were held in Golden Gate Park and some of the biggest names in music moved in, including Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. These days, Haight-Ashbury still proudly displays its alternative roots, with vintage stores, psychedelic artwork and health food shops in abundance. Definitely one of must-sees for anyone wondering what to do in San Francisco.
